Hokudai Center for Zoonosis Control in Zambia
Surveillance of viral zoonoses in sub-Saharan Africa
The Hokudai Center for Zoonosis Control in Zambia (HUCZCZ) was established in School of Veterinary Medicine, Zambia University in 2007. The HUCZCZ is a base for epidemiological studies in sub Sahara Africa. In order to perform the surveillance of various pathogens safely, the laboratory equips with a biosafety level-3 (BSL-3) facility.
We have continued surveillance of pathogens, such as various hemorrhagic fever viruses (Arenavirus, Bunyavirus, and Filovirus), influenza virus, Trypanosomal protozoan, Tuberculosis and Anthrax in wild and/or domestic animals. So far, we have reported novel anreviruses, Luna virus and Lunk virus, in rodents.
