◆In July 2024, an unexplaind outbreak of acute febrile illness primarily affected children in Gombe State, Nigeria.
◆Metagenomic sequencing (mNGS) of serum from 22 patients consistently detected a novel Pegivirus C variant in all samples. Genomic analysis revealed the full viral genome shares 92.7% identity with a 2018 Nigerian strain and clusters with West African isolates.
◆Although generally considered non-pathogenic, its detection in 100% of cases suggests a potential pathogenic role, warranting further investigation.

Report on the Prevalence of Canine Leishmaniasis in Malawi

◆Infection with the parasite Leishmania causes severe health consequences for both humans and dogs; however, Southern Africa has historically been considered free of this disease.
◆e recently reported the prevalence of canine leishmaniasis in Zambia (Chambaro HM and Hayashida K et al., 2025), and have now revealed that the disease is also prevalent in Malawi
◆Genetic analysis identified the causative protozoan as L. infantum zymodeme MON-1, the globally predominant genotype. This suggests it shares a common ancestor with strains confirmed in other parts of the world.

◆ Viral surveillance in bats is important to mitigate emerging zoonotic diseases.
◆ We developed a semicomprehensive detection method integrating group-wide RT-PCR for paramyxoviruses and multiplex next-generation sequencing.
◆ Collectively, seven sequences of novel paramyxoviruses close to PararubulavirusOrthorubulavirus, and Henipavirus genus were successfully identified from bat samples.

◆ Blood parasites, including malaria and various neglected tropical disease (NTD) parasites, remain highly prevalent, particularly in tropical regions.
◆ We combined a portable nanopore NGS device with a universal parasite 18S rDNA PCR* approach.
◆ This system enables agnostic parasite detection, including unknown or previously unrecognized parasites.
